PUPR Pekanbaru - ADB funding

Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province and a major economic hub in eastern Sumatra, faces high population density due to its vibrant daily economic activities. The Metropolitan Sanitation Management Investment Project (MSMIP) is designed to address this by providing a centralized wastewater treatment facility in the Rejosari area, Tenayan Raya, Pekanbaru. With a capacity of 8,100 m³/day, the facility processes domestic wastewater and discharges treated effluent into the nearest receiving water body, the Sail River. The treatment plant also accommodates waste from vacuum trucks, ensuring comprehensive sanitation coverage.

The FBAS technology-based wastewater treatment plant in Pekanbaru stands as one of the priority projects, offering a centralized solution for wastewater management across the entire Pekanbaru region.

One of the centralized wastewater treatment facilities inaugurated by President Joko Widodo utilizes FBAS (Fixed-Bed Biofilm Activated Sludge) technology. This system features sequential biological treatment zones that leverage fixed biomass, combining natural plant roots with engineered biofiber media.

The facility's high-performance treatment ensures that domestic wastewater discharge meets the quality standards outlined in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 68 of 2016. This project aims to enhance sanitation and hygiene standards, protect water resources, and prevent adverse health impacts, ultimately contributing to economic growth.
